This series contains registered files of the Aerodromes General Division and its successors. The records concern the divisional responsibilities for policy on civil aerodromes, matters relating to the British Airports Authority, fire and rescue services, noise and vibration problems, land administration and management of aerodrome services. From 1985, the records are also concerned with arrangements for the privatisation of the British Airports Authority.
Some files were re-registered into this series from the ER (AVIA 86), JZ and XV (AVIA 112) file series.

from 1999 Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions
The Aerodromes General Division was established in the Ministry of Aviation in 1959 and transferred to the Board of Trade in 1966. In 1968, when civil aviation functions were organised into four new divisions, Aerodromes General Division's responsibilities were assumed by Civil Aviation Division 3. This Division survived the Board of Trade's merger with the Ministry of Technology in 1970 to form the Department of Trade and Industry. When the latter department split into the three Departments of Trade, Industry and Prices and Consumer Protection in 1974, Civil Aviation Division 3 continued in existence as part of the Department of Trade, but in 1976 the work passed to that department's Civil Aviation Policy Division.
