This series contains files of the All Weather Operations Directorate of the Board of Trade and Department of Trade and Industry and its predecessor. The records concern the implementation of the UK all-weather operations programme in general and cover such subjects as category II and III operations, fog dispersal systems, automatic landing systems, weather minima and the organisation and policy of the directorate. They include several files containing technical papers.
The prefix WS stands for Weather Systems. It was first raised in 1968 and continued in use until 1972. Some of the files have been re-registered from the JF and CO series.

The Directorate of All Weather Operations was set up by the Board of Trade in 1968 as part of comprehensive reorganisation of the civil aviation branches and its main function was the coordination of all aspects of the UK programme aimed at achieving all-weather operations in civil aviation. Its areas of responsibility included aircraft such as automatic landing and guidance systems for London (Heathrow) Airport.
