The Southend-on-Sea Investment Grants Office had responsibility for general claims arising in South East England, but also had sole responsibility for computers, hovercraft, shipping and shipbuilding claims for the United Kingdom. The latter caused problems with foreign firms setting up offices in the United Kingdom to claim for ships built overseas. Questions of policy and eligibility arose and a small number of files have been secured to illustrate this segment of the scheme. It includes a few large or difficult case files as examples. Owing to cost, the claims for ships were first restricted and then phased out.
