Description

This series contains records regarding policy, general and record files of the Office of the Queen's Award to Industry and the Queen's Awards Office.

The records relate to the origins, organisation and review of the awards scheme by a committee under the chairmanship of Lord McFadzean, as well as to the processing of applications under the scheme. Papers of the main Advisory Committee, the Subordinate Committee on Export Achievement and the Steering Group on Exports are also included, together with a few papers of the subordinate Committee on Technology.

The WVQ prefix was used by the Queen's Award Office to cover the Queen's Awards Review 1999. At the suggestion of Buckingham Palace, the Queen's Awards Review was updated in 1999. The Government had asked that the review should take account of its wish to foster enterprise and innovation in business, as set out in the Competitiveness White Paper published in 1998. The Review, subsequently, was intended to cover all aspects of the Queen's Awards for Export, Technological and Environmental Achievement, including scope and eligibility. The review was led by a committee chaired by HRH The Prince of Wales, and the Queen's Awards Office retained secretariat duties. In order to extend the award's reach to more companies and industries, and to increase its prestige, the Queen's Award to Industry was renamed the Queen's Award for Enterprise. Files which have been selected for preservation include records of committee meetings, representations to the review by government departments and proposals for action arising from the review.
