Ledgers recording work undertaken by the translators in the Board of Trade, Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Industry.
The ledgers contain a record of translation work performed by and for the Board of Trade and details recorded varied over the years but most entries show date work received and dispatched, who requested the translation, amount of work (in folios), language, type of work (e.g. letter, decree) and the originator.
The ledgers in this series were started in 1919. The gap in the record during 1920-1922 is believed to coincide with a gap in appointments as it is known that the first professional Translator was appointed in the early 1920s. A second professional post was created in about 1948, and evidence of further expansion of the section can be seen in the Translators' initials which appear in the ledgers from the early 1950s.
A translator to the Board of Trade was appointed in 1868. By 1921 the combined post of Deputy Librarian and Translator was long established and although the two posts were later split, the Translator continued to report to the Librarian.
