Files of the Ministry of Transport, the Board of Trade (between 1965 and 1966 only) and the Ministry of Technology dealing with all aspects of shipbuilding and repair.
The series contains the papers of various committees and working parties involved in such matters as the development of nuclear propulsion. Files relating to the Committee of Inquiry into the Shipbuilding Industry (Geddes Committee) and to action resulting from its report are also included. Some files contain earlier papers inherited from the Admiralty, which was responsible for merchant shipbuilding and allied industries until 1959.
The SBR series originated in the Ministry of Transport and passed to the Board of Trade in February 1965.
