The marriages were originally registered in the Consistory Court of the Bishop of London and the records subsequently placed in the Registrar General's custody, together with returns received direct from HM ships during 1880-1899, in accordance with a directive of 25 February 1880 issued by the Lords Commissioners of the Admirality.
