Treasury, Board of Trade and Department of Trade and Industry: Trading with the Enemy...

Registered files of the Trading with the Enemy Branch (later Department) which was administered jointly by the Treasury and the Board of Trade.

This series contains policy and case files relating to all aspects of its work and that of its successor, the Administration of Enemy Property Department.

The few war-time papers surviving were mainly in the ED, T/E Gen, T/E Gen 21/ and CRT series. The ED series dealt with enemy debts and the CRT series with trading with the enemy. The T/G Gen files in this series were all that still survived. All that is known about the T/E Gen 21/ series is that they were used by the Censorship Section.

A new policy series T/E... /P began in 1948 and swiftly changed to AEP... /P. This series continued in use until 1986 although few new files were raised after AEP became part of Finance Division in 1957. With the appointment of Administrators some files in this sequence, dealing with the disposal of assets from Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania, were prefixed Adm(B), Adm(H), Adm(R) and general series with these three prefixes were also used. A DGEP prefix was used to deal with the disposal of German assets. The AEP annual series was used for similar work but usually on behalf of the Custodian. The majority of files in these series, and in the ED series, were case papers. The selection here consists of a small sample chosen to illustrate the variety of work done and property handled.
