Description

"Vessels, cargoes and slaves proceeded against in the Court of the Vice-Admiralty at Sierra Leone between June 1808 and March 1817".

Seizures by:-

  • HM ships [naval ships]: pp1-15, pp32-33, pp36-37;
  • officers commanding or attached to the garrisons of Senegal and Goree: pp16-19;
  • the colonial vessels (some with help of the Royal African Company): pp20-24, pp 30-31;
  • officers of the court: p24;
  • revenue officers: p25, p31;
  • private vessels of war [privateers], with or without letters of marque: pp27-28;
  • promiscuous parties: p29;
  • military and civil officers: pp33-35.

Each entry lists:-

  • Name of vessel, or description of property seized;
  • Captor or seizor;
  • Name and residence of agent;
  • Dates of sentences;
  • Decretal parts of sentences.

Many entries list the number of enslaved people, under the headings men, women, boys, girls.

Pencil annotations include 'No Appeal', 'Droit of Admiralty' etc, and seem to indicate a use of the book for a statistical report.
