Register of the Vice-Admiralty Court of New York, held for the Province of New York, at the city of New York, 16 September 1777 to 23 January 1778.
The record of prize hearings before the court, apparently written up in full from the notes in the assignation books (which do not survive before the session of 31 December 1777).
The volume starts with the formal reading, on 16 September 1777, of the two commissions of Robert Bayard, Judge and David Mathews, Register, each issued under the great seal of the province on New York on 6 December 1776, and each endorsed with their oaths sworn before Governor Tryon.
Although the dates of capture are not given, it is clear from a comparison with HCA 32 that many prizes were taken in 1776 and not brought into court until 1777 or 1778.
The sessions appear to be have been held frequently, two or three times a week, with an increasing level of business.
223 folios: not indexed.
These are the records described by Charles M Andrews, Guide to the Materials for American History, to 1783, in the Public Record Office of Great Britain, Vol II (Washington, 1914), p 330, no 1824.
