BT 238
1919-2005
Files of the Marine Departments of the Ministry of Transport relating to conditions of service; examinations and certificates of competency; training; discipline; repatriation; crew accommodation; health and welfare; safety at work; honours and awards for gallantry; and legislation.
The MC Series covers registered files relating to crew matters including certificates of competency, training, manning, discipline, safety at work, standard of crew accommodation, welfare, conditions of service, and also recommendations for seamen's awards.
Under the old system all subject matter was included in a general M series of files. About 1952 it was considered more convenient for the various aspects to be handled by three separate branches and the material was consequently divided into three different series into which earlier files were occasionally re-registered. The other two Divisions within the Marine group were Marine Safety (MS) and Marine Navigational Aids (MNA). The records of those file series are included in the records of this department. These series continued in use under the board and later Department of Trade.
