Description

Portugal: Algarve: 'Mappa ou Carta Geographica das Reinos de Portugal e Algarve'. Three sheets. Map showing place names, rivers, highlands, provinces, battles and routes. In upper left corner is a 'Geographical and Historical Account of Portugal'; below are notes on the preparation of the map. 'Remarks upon the Second Edition' by Faden reveal his use of surveys by Lieutenant-General Rainsford and maps published at Madrid by T Lopez. All the notes and scale bars are in English and Portuguese; the dedication only in English. Title draped over stone block, behind which are three female allegorical figures: one is Britannia, one bears arms of Portugal, and the third is clad in armour. At the feet of the figures are military, naval and commercial symbols. In the distance, a fleet of ships is pictured approaching Lisbon harbour (suggested by the Tower of Bélem); on the shore is a group of clerics, possibly Jesuits. This scene was drawn by B Ralph. Dedicated to John, Earl of Bute; dedication and scale bars set against stone backgrounds, the former on a carved tablet surmounted by coat of arms of the earls of Bute. Scale: 5.7 inches to 40 miles. Compass rose. Compiled by Thomas Jefferys. Engraved by Miguel Rodrigues. Published by William Faden, 1 January 1790.
