Description

Europe, south-east. Two maps: (1) Map of south-east Europe on 20 sheets: 'F. Handtke's Special-Karte der Europäischen Turkei [F Handtke's Special Map of Europe and Turkey]', with an index map printed by the Topographical Department of the War Office entitled 'Map of Turkey in Europe and the Danubian Principalities to illustrate Part 1 of Armies of Europe'. A key to the maps and a general description is printed on the back of each sheet. Second edition, showing revised political frontiers. References on each sheet to national and provincial boundaries. Scale: 1:600,000. Drawn, engraved and lithographed by C Fleming, Glogau. Published 1877. (2) 'Map of Turkey in Europe and the Danubian Principalities to illustrate Part 1 of Armies of Europe'. Coloured to serve as an index map to (1). Includes manuscript additions beyond borders. Scale: 1:43,718,400 (calculated). Drawn by E G Ravenstein. Engraved by T Kips. Engraved and printed at the Topographical Department, War Office, under the direction of Captain M Petrie. The addition of the date '27.2.83' to the dorse of some sheets of (1) may suggest that (2) dates from that year. Dimensions: (1) 20 sheets, each 51 cm x 38.5 cm; index sheet 25 cm x 24.5 cm; (2) 36.5 cm x 31 cm.
