Malta. (1-4, 6-7) Six maps. (1) Malta. Map showing roads, rivers, the nature of the terrain, and place names. Reference note on place-name elements. Scale: 2 inches to 1 mile [1:31,680]. Compass star; south-west at the top. Surveyed and drawn by Lieutenant [James] W Worsley, Royal Engineers, Valletta, 1824; [engraved at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel James, Royal Engineers, 1856], with the outline by C Callaghan, writing by J E Ainslie and hills by W Archibald. Coloured MS additions show [four sites for a proposed hospital], aqueducts, works completed, in progress and not yet done, and a railway between Valletta and Mdina. The site of Saint Michael's Bastion is marked in pencil. (6) Copy of the central portion of item (1). Coloured MS additions show sites 'C' and 'D' (see below). Compass indicator in MS; south-west at the top. (2) 'Plan of the Fortress of Malta': map of the area between Zonqor, Pembroke Barracks, Birkirkara and Zejtun. showing roads, buildings, place names and contours. Reference table to Maltese place name elements; notes on colouring (not marked on the map). Scale: 6 inches to 1 mile [1:10,560]. Compass star; south-west at the top. Surveyed by the Royal Engineers, 1858-1862, under the direction of Lieutenant [E H] Steward, Captain [F H] Rich, Captain [E L] Bland and Lieutenant Colonel [R M] Laffan, all of the Royal Engineers; zincographed at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, under the superintendence of Captain [R M] Parsons, Royal Engineers, 1869. Coloured MS additions show a possible site ('A') on Ta'Xbiex Hill for a proposed hospital, and three alternative locations ('B', 'C' and 'D'), all between Valletta and Birkirkara; MS reference table. (7) 'Plan of the Fortress of Malta': sheet 4 only of a map on multiple sheets, showing Birkirkara and its environs. Scale: 1:2,500. Surveyed by the Royal Engineers, 1858-1862; zincographed at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1868. Coloured MS additions show sites 'B' and 'C', both to the east of the town. Compass indicator in MS; south-west at the top. The printed title and an MS title have been struck through in coloured ink. (3) Parts of two joined sheets from the same map as item (7). Coloured MS additions show site 'D', near Santa Margarita church. Compass indicator in MS; south-west at the top. (4) Parts of two joined sheets from the same map as item (7). Coloured MS additions show site 'A', distinguishing land to be acquired by the War Department and land over which the War Department required clearance rights. Items (3-4) and (6-7) all signed by Colonel W Phillpotts, Commanding Royal Engineer: (3, 6-7) 14 January 1886; (4) undated. Dimensions between 23 cm x 38 cm and 63 cm x 82.5 cm.
