Description

Kent: Halstead. Six maps and plans showing a military mobilisation site near Halstead, Kent.

(2, 4-5) Three copies of the Ordnance Survey 1:2500 County Series sheet Kent XXVIII.12: map showing land to the south and west of Knockholt Pound; the mobilisation site (just west of Dutchmore Wood) is marked in the print on items (2) and (4), but not on item (5). Reference table. Scale: 1:2,500. Surveyed in 1868; revised to 1865; second edition, zincographed and printed at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, 1896. Two additional maps are affixed to the face of item (4): (i) part of Ordnance Survey six-inch County series sheet [Kent XXVIII]; (ii) parts of Ordnance Survey one-inch [?Old Series England and Wales sheets I and VI] joined, covering the area between Bromley and Sevenoaks. Different MS additions, all in colour, appear on each item. (2) Boundary changes to the site and some [?]triangulation; 'survey corrected' and signed by Captain C E Norton, Royal Engineers, 30 November 1896. (4) 'Halsted [sic] Mobilization Site Home District No.32': boundary changes and War Department rights of way; compass indicator in MS; MS note: 'For War Department purposes only'; signed by Colonel K R Todd, Commanding Royal Engineer, Home District, 2 September 1896. (5) The site outline and boundary stones only; additions undated. Items (2) and (4) damaged at the right-hand edge.

(3) A copy of the northern half of the same Ordnance Survey sheet, lacking the margins, showing the mobilisation site in the print. Coloured MS additions show boundary changes to the site; additions undated.

(1, 6) Two outline plans of the site; item (6) also showing contours. MS, coloured; item (1) on tracing cloth. Scale: 1 inch to 30 feet [1:360]. Compass indicators. Item (1) based on a survey by Captain Norton, Royal Engineers, 3 November 1896. Item (6) signed by Captain W Russell, Royal Engineers, 5 October 1892; contours added and further signed by Captain [?]Broke, Royal Engineers, 3 December 1892. A note on item (6) states: 'This Plan to be returned to the War Office (Inspector General of Fortifications)'.
