Description

Devon: Plymouth. 15 sheets of the Ordnance Survey 1:2,500 County Series maps, together covering much of the area between Saint Budeaux, Crabtree and Staddon Heights: (1) Devon CXVII.11; (2) Devon CXVII.12; (3) Devon CXVII.13; (4) Devon CXVII.14; (5) Devon CXVII.15; (6) Devon CXVII.16; (7) Devon CXVIII.13; (8) [Devon CXXIII.12]; (9) Devon CXXIII.16; (10) Devon CXXIV.1; (11) Devon CXXIV.2; (12) [Devon CXXIV.9]; (13) [Devon CXXIV.13]; (14) [Devon CXXIX.4]; (15) [Devon CXXX.1]. The sheets were produced by parish and areas outside of the stated parishes are blank; items (10-11) and (15) have areas from other parishes (cut from other sheets along the parish boundary lines) affixed over the blank areas. No details of printing or printed dates shown. Printed inscriptions to items (2-3, 7-9, 12-14) state: For 'War Department purposes only'. Coloured MS additions to each sheet mark various, mainly unexplained, features; areas edged in green, pink and blue probably mark clearance lands. These maps were produced as index sheets to photographs of clearance lands; figures in green refer to the pages in 'Book 980', which, according to the War Office map docket book (which was the original means of reference to the War Office maps), is where the photographs were kept. Each sheet signed by Captain C Crawford, Royal Engineers, 11 March 1872. A note on item (1) is dated 20 April 1874. The photographs have not been identified within the holdings of The National Archives.
