Description

Kent: Medway Towns. 10 maps. (1) Map on four joined sheets. Scale: 3 inches to 1 mile [1:21,120]. Enlarged from [Ordnance Survey six-inch County Series] sheets Kent XI-XII and [Kent XIX-XX]; photozincographed at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, under the superintendence of Captain Parsons, 1866. Coloured MS additions form a graphic index to the sheetlines of items (2-10) and mark land areas in the environs of Chatham and the Eastern Defences in green and pink [?to show clearance lands].

(2-10) Nine sheets of the Ordnance Survey 1:2,500 County Series: (2) Kent XIX.8; (3) Kent XIX.10; (4) Kent XIX.11; (5) Kent XIX.12; (6) Kent XIX.14; (7) Kent XIX.15; (8) Kent XX.1; (9) Kent XX.5; (10) Kent XX.9. No details of printing or printed dates shown. A printed inscription to item (10) states: For 'War Department purposes only'. Coloured MS additions to each sheet mark various, mainly unexplained, features. These maps were produced as index sheets to photographs of clearance lands; figures in blue refer to the pages in 'Book 980', which, according to the War Office map docket book (which was the original means of reference to the War Office maps), is where the photographs were kept. Each sheet signed by Lieutenant Colonel [illegible], Commanding Royal Engineer, 18 May 1868, to accompany his return of lands of that date. Several of the sheets are marked with further notes, in pencil. The photographs have not been identified within the holdings of The National Archives.
