Description

Alderney. Seven maps showing fortifications and War Department property. (1) Index map of the whole island, showing the sheetlines of items (2-7). Reference table to War Department lands and the means by which they were acquired. Scale: 1:10,000. Compass indicators. Reduced from 1:2,500-scale maps under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel E Mitchell, Commanding Royal Engineer, 1881. (2-5) Map, on four sheets, covering the northern and eastern portions of the island. Reference tables and notes on buildings, boundary stones, etc, appear on item (3). Scale: 1:2,500. Compass indicators. Surveyed and drawn under the direction of Colonel A R V Crease, Commanding Royal Engineer, 1880. (6) Map showing the site of La Quoire, on the southern coast. Scale: 1:2,500. Compass indicator. Surveyed under the direction of Colonel Crease, 1878; reduced from the 1:500 scale under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell, 1881. (7) Map showing the site of an old telegraph tower, in ruins, in the south-western part of the island. Scale: 1:2,500. Compass indicator. Surveyed and reduced as item (6). All items zincographed and printed at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, under the direction of Captain Mayock, Royal Engineers, 1883. MS note on item (3) concerning a planned new road; note dated 21 March 1898.
