'Plan of the Fortress of Malta': map of the area between Zonqor, Pembroke Barracks, Birkirkara and Zejtun. showing roads, buildings, place names and contours. Reference table. Scale: 6 inches to 1 mile. Compass star; south-west at the top. Surveyed by the Royal Engineers, 1858-1862, under the direction of Lieutenant [E H] Steward, Captain [F H] Rich, Captain [E L] Bland and Lieutenant Colonel [R M] Laffan, all of the Royal Engineers; zincographed at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, under the superintendence of Captain [R M] Parsons, Royal Engineers, 1869. Coloured MS additions form a graphic index to the sheetlines of a 1:2,500-scale map of the area, on 16 sheets. Endorsed: '1/2500 Survey of Valetta [sic, Valletta]... 16 sheets & an Index... 19 Jan y. 1867'. Sheet size 64 cm x 101 cm.
The War Office docket book (which was the original means of reference to the War Office maps) implies that this index map was formerly kept with the 16 sheets of the 1867 map, but was separated from them at some time prior to its transfer to the Public Record Office. The 1867 map has not been found within the holdings of The National Archives.
