Union of South Africa: Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal province, Republic of South Africa): Pietermaritzburg. Seven plans of barrack buildings. (1) Plan, on tracing cloth, of an officer's mess, with coloured MS additions showing its reappropriation as the Commanding Officer's quarters, February 1912. (2-4) Three sketch plans, on tracing cloth, showing the layout of buildings. Scale: (2) 1 inch to 100 feet [1:1,200]; (3-4) 1 inch to 200 feet [1:2,400]. Compass indicators to items (2) and (4). Coloured MS additions to all three plans showing new buildings erected: (2) between 1 April 1911 and 31 March 1912; (3) between 1 April 1910 and 31 March 1911; (4) between 1 April 1909 and 31 March 1910. MS reference table to item (2). (5-7) 'Barrack Atlas Plan': three similar maps of the whole fort. Reference tables to boundaries, water pipes, etc; items (6-7) also bear reference tables to accommodation. Scale: 1 inch to 100 feet. Compass indicators. Item (5) prepared by Lieutenant Colonel W F N Noel, Commanding Royal Engineer, 22 February 1897; zincographed and printed at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, and corrected to June 1899. Item (6) prepared and zincographed at item (5) but corrected only to March 1898. Item (7) is an earlier version of items (5-6) also zincographed at Chatham but dated 1886. Various additions and notes, many in colour, to all three maps, made at various dates to 1913. Coloured pencil inscriptions on items (6-7) imply that item (5) should be taken as superseding them.
