Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium) and France. Volume of maps and plans bound in red leather with an ornamental gold border and the arms of Noailles on the front and back covers. The documents relate to the military campaign of 1694 fought between French forces under [François Henri de Montmorency-Bouteville], Duke of Luxembourg, and the forces of the Grand Alliance. Title page: 'Camps et Ordres de Marches de l'Armée du Roy en Flandres Commandée par Monseigneur le Marechal Duc de Luxembourg sous Monseigneur. En l'Année 1694': title on a draped tablet surmounted by a helmeted figure and surrounded by military equipment, foliage, etc. Table of contents listing the maps; reference table to colouring. Six maps of various parts of the region showing troop movements at different stages during the campaign and the locations of camps at: Bossuit, 'Dausoir' [?Daussois], Farciennes, Fosses-la-Ville, Gembloux, Horelle, Kortrijk (or Courtrai) and westward along the northern bank of the River Leie (or River Lys), Sint-Truiden (or Saint-Trond), and Soye. Scale: 6 cm to 1 French common league. Compass stars. The volume also contains six orders of march, three orders of battle, a special order dated 14 June [1694], two plans of cantonments, maps of Maubeuge, Kortrijk (or Courtrai) and Dunkirk (Dunkerque), and a plan of a fire ship apparently intended to be used for attacking the British and Dutch fleets off Dunkirk. Surveyed and drawn by Pennier, Geographer and Engineer to the French king. The name 'Dr Wm Muller' is inscribed inside the volume; this is probably Wilhelm Müller, instructor of military science at the University of Göttingen, c1797-1806, and afterwards (as Sir William Müller) an officer in the British army.
