Kingdom of the Netherlands: Mons (or Bergen; now in Belgium). Two maps and five sheets of drawings. (1-5) Five sections, mounted onto a single backing sheet, showing: (1) proposed works; (2) different levels of inundation; (3) a line through Mont Pallisel to the foot of the escarpment; (4) the command of the Heights of Bertaimont of the works; (5) the present state of the works. (6) Map showing the fortifications as proposed to be restored; most of the title and part of the scale bar are missing. (7) 'Plan of the Town of Mons With the line of the proposed Fortifications ...'. Scale: (1, 5) 1 inch to 30 feet [1:360]; (2) 1 inch to 100 feet [1:1,200] (horizontal) and 1 inch to 30 feet (vertical); (3-4) 1 inch to about 75 feet [1:900]; (6-7) 1 inch to about 400 feet [1:4,800]. Dimensions between 87 cm x 96 cm and 20 cm x 492 cm.
Originally accompanying the Report of the Committee of British Engineers on the Fortresses of the Netherlands; the report is not filed with these drawings. This piece was part of a collection of plans and drawings held by Major General Sir John Jones which, following his death in 1843, were sent to the office of the Inspector General of Fortifications; correspondence about the transfer and a list of the plans and drawings are among the papers in WO 55/959
