Kingdom of the Netherlands: Menen (or Menin; now in Belgium). 4 items. Two maps of the town, with two sheets of sections: (1-2) sections relating to items (3) and (4) respectively; (3) map showing the proposed new line of fortifications, compared to the former positions of defence works; (4) map showing the remains of the old works. Scale: (1) 1 inch to 30 feet [1:360]; (2) 1 inch to 20 feet [1:240]; (3) 3 inches to 1,240 feet [1:4,960]; (4) 1 inch to 310 feet [1:3,720]. Compass indicators to items (3-4). Dimensions: (1) 44 cm x 74 cm; (2) 43 cm x 56 cm; (3) 61 cm x 89 cm; (4) 67 cm x 93 cm.
Originally accompanying the Report of the Committee of British Engineers on the Fortresses of the Netherlands; the report is not filed with these drawings. This piece was part of a collection of plans and drawings held by Major General Sir John Jones which, following his death in 1843, were sent to the office of the Inspector General of Fortifications; correspondence about the transfer and a list of the plans and drawings are among the papers in WO 55/959
