France: Seine département (now divided between Hauts-de-Seine, Paris, Seine-Saint-Denis and Val-de-Marne départments). Five copies of a map. 'Carte du Département de la Seine executée au Dépôt de la Guerre ...': surveyed by officers of the Corps d'Etat-Major; [drawn and produced] by the [French] War Department; printed by Lemercier and Co, Paris. Coloured MS additions to items (1) and (5), show [?existing and proposed] forts and lines of communication; a note to item (1) states: 'The Forts & Communications in red pencil were pointed out to Colonel Jervois by a French General Officer on 16/5/72 as being the proposed new defences of Paris'. Different coloured MS additions to items (2-4), show the deployment of French and German armies [?during the Siege of Paris, 1870-1871]; MS reference tables, in French.
From the War Office map docket book (which was the original means of reference to the War Office maps), it seems that item (1) formerly consisted of two separate sheets; the two parts were [re]joined at some point following their transfer to the Public Record Office.
