Central America; West Indies. Chart, on two sheets, of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, showing currents and soundings; also covering the Atlantic coast of North and South America between Saint Simon's Island, Georgia (now in the United States of America) and the mouth of the Essequibo River (now in Guyana), and the Pacific coast between Point Galera, Mexico, and Point Caracoles (now in Panama), showing relief, rivers and named settlements. Descriptive reference table to item (2), in a decorative panel. Rococo cartouche, to item (2), containing a dedication to King George III. Scale: 1 inch to about 25 miles. Compass stars and lines. [By] Captain Joseph Smith Speer, 49th Regiment of Foot; originally engraved by J Bayly, London, and published 31 August 1771; [?item (1) only of] this edition, engraved by Thomas Bowen, Clerkenwell, London, 1773. A certificate of accuracy signed by John Pownall, Secretary to the Plantation Office, Whitehall, January 25 1774, is affixed to the face of item (1). Dimensions: (1) 170 cm x 137 cm; (2) 171.5 cm x 150 cm.
