Description

United Provinces of the Netherlands: Breda (now in Noord-Brabant province, the Netherlands). 5 items. (4-5) Two copies of a map (partly a perspective view) of the town and its environs, showing the nature of the terrain, villages, rivers, and the positions of Spanish troops besieging the town, [1624-1625]; in the foreground is a panoramic view of the Spanish camp, showing [General Spinola] and his officers on horseback, with their entourage. Decorative border; coat of arms of Spain. Scale: 1 inch to 1,000 feet. Compass rose. Item (4) drawn and engraved by Jacques Callot, [?1628]; item (5) is a later edition produced by Israël Silvestre, Paris. (3) A printed reference table, in French and Spanish, to items (4-5); damaged and repaired at the left-hand side, with the missing information restored in MS. (1-2) MS continuation of the reference table, in French only.

Breda was held as part of the Spanish Netherlands from the end of the siege, on 2 June 1625, until its recapture by the United Provinces in 1637 (confirmed in 1648). This engraving was commissioned after the Spanish victory by the Infanta Isabella-Clara-Eugenia; the suggested date of 1628 for Callot's engraving is from the British Library Catalogue. According to Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, Silvestre died in 1691.
