Description

Indo-China: Annam (now part of Vietnam). Three charts, on a single sheet, of the coast between Tourane Bay (now Vinh Da Nang) and Cape Varella (now Mui Nay): (i) 'Copy of the Original Chart of the Coast of Cochin-China. Taken from the Depot of the Tribunal of Mathematicks and presented with the permission of H.M. Canh Hung, King of Cochin China, to George Taswell Esq.r Master-Attendant at Madrass [sic] by His very humble servant S. Baresy Officer in the Navy of the King of Cochin-China'. (ii) 'Chart of the Coast of Cochin-China From a French MS in the Frigate La Driade Commanded by M. Le Chevalier de Kishunt Laid down by M. de Chesney'. (iii) Track chart showing the route taken by a ship [?La Driade] between 28 May and 26 August [?1797]. Soundings to charts (ii) and (iii). Reference note on the considerable differences between (i) and (ii) with respect to latitudes and spelling. Scale: 1 inch to about 12 miles. Engraved by Palmer; published by Dalrymple, 1 November 1797. Various MS additions, some in pencil, mainly marking additional place names. Stamped at the Royal Engineers' Office, Mauritius, 14 June 1875.

Although the chart titles identify the location as Cochin China, this is misleading: the area covered clearly lies further north-east, in Annam.
