The files in this series came to the Department of Industry as a result of the transfer of ministerial responsibility.
Series is accruing
In 1969 the General Post Office ceased to be a Government Department and became a Public Corporation. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications was formed to deal with residual Government functions, and in 1974 this Ministry was dissolved and its functions split between the Home Office and the Department of Industry, Industry becoming responsible for sponsorship for the Post Office and Cable and Wireless Ltd., and for international relations on postal and telecommunications policy.
