The Board of Trade Advisory Council was set up in 1918, following the issue of a White Paper (Cd. 8912 - 'Memorandum with respect to the reorganisation of the Board of Trade', dated January 1918).
Initially known as the Provisional Advisory Council, the Council's purpose was to advise the Commerce and Industry Departments of the board on a wide range of matters, including the appointment of new members of the Council, food industries, textiles, iron and steel, coal, chemicals, gas, non-ferrous metals, finance and banking, railways, co-operative societies, and Australian, Canadian and Indian trade.
Represented on the Council were various Board of Trade Committees, the Association of Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of British Industries, Labour interests, the Foreign, Colonial and India Offices and Dominion governments.
The Council existed until September 1939 when it was suspended, but few papers have been found after 1928.
