These papers relate to the Board of Trade's responsibility under the Distribution of Industry Acts 1945 and 1950 for providing financial assistance and premises for industrial undertakings and improved services in the development areas. Under the Industry Acts of 1972 and 1975 the system of regional development grants continued and was further enhanced by a scheme of regional selective assistance.
Subjects covered by the records include the postwar redistribution of industrial premises under the control of various government departments; the management of industrial estates and schemes for alleviating unemployment, the control of office development, regional selective assistance, the future of regional development funds, the review of the office incentive scheme and EEC regional policy and funding.
The series also contains some papers of interdepartmental committees, as well as departmental and regional bodies, which were concerned with policy in this area. There are also schedules of industrial development certificates approved and refused under town and country planning legislation and files concerning applications for assistance under local employment acts.
