Description

Manuscript prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Jamaica.

Captured ship: Staadt Trieste, or La Ville de Trieste, formerly La Ville de Ciotat (master Jean Joseph Hyvert).

History: a French merchant ship (360 tons, 8 guns plus arms to protect against Turkish corsairs, 34 men, and 7 French passengers including one woman) bound from Bordeaux to Cap François, Saint Domingue, laden with wine, flour, oil, cordage, soap and candles; taken on 10th May 1783 in sight of Cap François by HMS Tartar (William George Fairfax commanding), in sight of HMS Duguay Trouin (Benjamin Hulke), and brought into Kingston, Jamaica and there condemned.
