Manuscript prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of St Kitts.
Captured ship: Helvetia (master Jacob Janusz Rouaan).
History: a Dutch merchant ship (94 lasts), bound from Amsterdam to St Eustatius, laden with red wine, soap, tobacco, flour, textiles, merchandise; taken on 3 February 1781 in road of St Eustatius by HMS Sandwich (Walter Young commanding), HMS Barfleur (John Nicholson Inglefield commanding),HMS Shrewsbury (Mark Robinson commanding), HMS Princessa (Sir Thomas Rich commanding), HMS Prince William (Stair Douglas commanding), HMS Torbay (John Lewis Gideon commanding), all in the fleet of Admiral Rodney, and brought into St Christopher [St Kitts].
Appeal on behalf of merchants of Basle, subjects of Swiss Republic of Basel. Copies of invoices, bills of lading etc submitted as evidence of neutral ownership by merchants of Switzerland.
