- Sir Horace Mann was a friend and long term correspondent of Horace Walpole. On the death of the Old Pretender (James Francis Edward Stuart) in 1766, Mann persuaded the pope to suppress the titles of the Old Pretender's successor at Rome. Mann was eventually made envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary in 1782, a title he retained until his death in 1786.
