Administrative / biographical background

The Court Service was established as an Executive Agency of the Lord Chancellor's Department on 3 April 1995, to provide administrative support to the Supreme Court of England and Wales, county courts and a number of tribunals in England and Wales.

On 1 April 2005 the Magistrates' Courts Service and The Court Service were brought together into one single organisation for the first time, to become HM Courts Service, an executive agency of the Department for Constitutional Affairs (DCA).

On 1 April 2011 Her Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service was created to bring together HM Courts Service and the Tribunals Service into one integrated agency.
