It was considered desirable that the new Department of Overseas Trade (Development & Intelligence) set up in 1918 as a joint department of the Foreign Office and the Board of Trade should have the guidance in its work of representatives of financial, commercial, industrial and other interests in the United Kingdom. A small Advisory Committee was therefore appointed, which would meet at intervals to deal with matters relating to the Department which might be referred to it from time to time.
The Committee held its first meeting in April, 1918, and it continued in being until the end of 1930 when it was decided to merge it with the Overseas Trade Development Council which had been created in April of that year.
