Donation books of prison charities
Contains details of gifts, legacies and donations given to poor and needy prisoners or to the prison in general by private individuals, religious bodies, and charitable guilds.
The entries in these books can be keyed-up by date with entries in the receipt books of charities.
A calender of the gifts enabled the keeper to see when each instalment of payment was due. Money was donated for the relief of poor inmates, and food (bread, beef, and oatmeal), fueld or extra clothing was paid for by donors. Certain legacies and gifts were used specifically to pay off the debts of inmates in full, thus allowing them to be released.
