Administrative / biographical background

In December 1917 the Board of Agriculture, at the request of the Flax Control Board, undertook a flax production scheme involving the cultivation of ten thousand acres of flax fibre and arrangements for dealing with the resultant crop. To manage the scheme the board set up a Flax Production Branch which took over those organisations which had previously been responsible for flax production, notably the enterprise of the British Flax and Hemp Growers Society, which had operated under the auspices of the Development Commission with the assistance of the War Office. The board also appointed a Central Committee of Flax Production to advise and assist them in this work. The Branch was wound up in 1921.
