Description

Correspondence, Original-Secretary of State: Correspondence received from Offices (Government Departments and other organisations) and individuals on subjects concerning the Bahamas. Correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices (Government Departments):

  • Admiralty (supposed case of yellow fever landed from HMS Zephyr, proceedings of schooner General Grant, application of quarantine laws to HM ships, movements of Spanish gunboat Dardo);
  • Board of Trade (salvors of the North Mackie buoy);
  • Treasury (remittances to Crown Agents, mails service and withdrawal of subsidy, Postal Union, appropriation of postages on Bahamas mail, Virginius indemnity and claim of representatives of J Clarke, The Customs Act 39 Vic Chapter 1);
  • Foreign Office (opening of mail bags by the US authorities, rights of fishing and sponging off the Cuban coasts and prohibition, arrival of armed Cubans at Racoon Bay, arms for Cubans concealed in Ragged Island, proceedings off coast of Cuba, case of the Amazona);
  • War Office (withdrawal of troops);
  • Miscellaneous Cotton Supply Association (Texan cotton, samples of Bahamas grown cotton);
  • Kew Gardens (castor oil seed from the Bahamas, tobacco and cigars from the Bahamas);
  • Colonial Office (mail service continuance);
  • Geological Survey (cave earth)
