Description

Correspondence, Original-Secretary of State: Correspondence received from Offices (Government Departments and other organisations) on subjects concerning the Bahamas during the period January to December 1873, together with correspondence from individuals (A-Z) received during 1873. Offices:

  • Admiralty (despatch of troops for Nassau from Jamaica, claim for coal for HMS Fly);
  • Crown Agents (furniture for Government House, Act for a loan for paying off liabilities, carpet for Government House);
  • Board of Trade (promotion of light keepers, thanks from US Government for assistance with the Missouri, expenses of the inspector of lighthouses, quarterly report by the inspector of lighthouses, revolving light and apparatus at Gun Cay, supplies, oil and provisions for Lighthouses, appointment of supernumerary light keeper and the lighthouse tender Richmond, Act regulating duties of masters of vessels in the Merchant Service, cordage and repair of rigging for the Richmond, condition of oil supplied, lighthouse accounts, Mr Farrington's application for remission of income tax, construction and materials of lighthouse on Bird Rock, appointment of a third light keeper at Cay Sal, works at Gun Cay, removal of light keeper Thompson and family from Gun Cay, case of the Anna, lighthouse accounts, appointment of N H E Garner as Supernumerary Light keeper, lighthouse stores, claim for the distressed seamen of the True Blue, appointment of light keeper, lighthouse estimates, stranding of the Daisy, investigation into Mr Turner's accounts);
  • Law Officers (steam tug Anna, redemption of debentures, Letters Patent of 1871 appointing Mr John Pope Hennessy to be Governor);
  • Treasury (escheated property, mail subsidy, Act for Telegraphic Communications, Act for Import Duties, transfer of grant for postage, redemption of debentures, second key of the military depot chest);
  • Foreign Office (appointment of Mr C Sargent as US Consular Agent, appointment of Mr T W Williams as Acting German Consul, Humane Society Medal to Sergeant Juan Mulet, appointment of Mr Anderson as Consul for Haiti, services of Consul General Archibald and the mail service, prohibition of fishing in Cuban waters, the Virginius executions);
  • War Office (proposed permanent withdrawal of the troops, reinforcements for Gold Coast, despatch of troops from Jamaica);
  • General Post Office (mail service via New York, timetable, despatch from London and statement of account, despatch of supplement mail to Bahamas, new mail contract, colonial mail contribution);
  • Customs Office (an Act with regard to the laws regulating the Department of the Receiver General);
  • British Consulate General (mail service timetable).
