Description

Correspondence, Original-Secretary of State: Correspondence received from Offices (Government Departments and other organisations) on subjects concerning the Bahamas during the period August to December 1872, together with correspondence from individuals (A-Z) received during 1872. Offices:

  • Admiralty (Governor's visit to Rum Cay, Watling's Island, Cat Island and Harbour Island in HMS Fly; stationing of a warship at the Bahama Islands);
  • Crown Agents (Administrator Strahan's salary);
  • Board of Trade (lightkeepers use of the commercial code of signals; appointment of Lieutenant Whately as the Inspector of Lighthouses; Lieutenant Whately's salary and expenses; lighthouse stores and repairs; lighthouse tender Richmond repairs, stores and new lifeboat; supernumerary light keeper, Joseph Lewis; Light Keeper Jerman's qualification certificate; lighthouse inspection report; supernumerary light keeper, Robert Spalding, temporary appointment; trade laws; Gun Cay Lighthouse repairs and stores; Hog Island Lighthouse, requisition for oil; Farrington's rebate of income tax on his salary; bill of landing for lighthouse stores; Lighthouse Department sale of stores and the hire of an office and storeroom; Lighthouse Service circulating library; list of light keepers; duplicate documents to replace the ones lost in the mail steamer Missouri; application from R Whately for the office of cash accountant);
  • Foreign Office (the governor of the Bahamas and the Cuban authorities; piratical attack on the Britannia; seizure of the schooner Britannia by a Spanish vessel; recognition of Señor M Menendez as Spanish Consul; appointment of R G Sawyer as United States Consular Agent at San Salvador; Don Manuel Menendez exequatur as Spanish Consul; steamer Virginius suspected of aiding the Cuban insurgents; privileges granted to certain US citizens in the preserving and packing of colonial produce; release of two British subjects who were imprisoned in a Spanish Gaol near Cadiz; Frederick William's appointment as German Consular Agent at Inagua; Spanish sergeant saves the life of the cook of the Mary Williams; thanks from the US Government for assistance given to the Bienville; release of the two British subjects who were imprisoned in Carraca Jail, San Fernando);

  • Land Board (arrangement for the prevention of irregularities in Crown Lands Department);
  • General Post Office (extract of log enclosed; delay in arrival of the mail at Nassau; mail timetable; cessation of fortnightly despatch; despatch of mail during winter months; claim on the colony of £173 17s 3d for the conveyance of mails; fortnightly mail service; burning of the Missouri with mails on board; withdrawal of the steamer employed for the mail service);
