Description

Correspondence, Original-Secretary of State: Letters from various government offices (departments) and individuals most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 23/99 and CO 23/100. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows: Offices (Government Departments):

  • Admiralty (Colonel Cockburn's passage on the Romney);
  • Commander in Chief (remittance of John Figo's sentence to transportation, Lieutenant Colonel Nicolls' conduct, reward for Lieutenant Tew for his services in the case of the wrecked Spanish slave ship Esperanza, Chief Justice Lees explanation of the case of the two West India Regiment privates sentenced to transportation);
  • Foreign Office (lighthouse at Cay Sal, Spanish occupation of Cay Sal, questions if Cay Sal was a resort for pirates, handing over of slave ship crews to foreign powers, sale of the Portuguese ship Vigilante);
  • Law Officers (cases of convicts Colin Taylor and Brutus Frobes);
  • Treasury (liberated African establishment at Rosslyn, lighthouse construction at Abaco and Gun Cay, asks if President Hunter is administering the government, expenditure for African establishments, repayment of stamp duty, payment to Stipendiary Magistrate Munro, barrack accommodation, conveyance of troops costs, salaries, agreement with Spanish government for constructing a lighthouse at Cay Sal, £300 for Normal Schools, cancellation of indentures of Africans who arrived on the Hebe, reappointment of Mr Deane as Warehouse Keeper at Grand Cay);
  • War Office (payment of Attorney General Lieutenant Henry Williams);
  • Baptist Mission House (the officer commanding the troops' order for the soldiers not to enter the Baptist chapel);
