The 1839 Copyright of Designs Act (2 & 3 Vict c 17) provided protection for the design of the ornamentation, shape or configuration of all manufactured articles and for the designs on textile fabrics, except for lace and for fabrics made from linen, cotton, calico, muslin, wool, silk, hair and for mixtures of those fabrics which had been protected by earlier legislation (27 Geo III c 38, 34 Geo III c 23 identified as being statute relevant to designs and printing on fabric etc. c 23 and 2 & 3 Vict c 13). In September 1842 the 1839 act was replaced by a piece of consolidating and amending legislation (5 & 6 Vict c 100).
Under the 1839 Act, proprietors were required to submit three copies or drawings of their designs, two of which were to be retained by the Registrar who was also responsible for maintaining a classified index of designs.
