Note (Additional information about the record)
- 1 bdle. Being the manuscript of a book in two volumes, in continuation of the work published by him in London in 1884, entitled Spanish and Portuguese South America during the Colonial Period. The author, who had been secretary of legation at Tokyo in 1872-1873 (for a summary of his official career see The Foreign Office List, 1893, pp.229-230) and who had become blind, handed this manuscript over to Sir Ernest Satow in December 1891 for examination with a view to publication: and shortly afterwards died, viz. on 28 October 1892. Sir Ernest did not regard it as sufficiently elaborated for this purpose. (P.R.O.30/33/15/14, 31 December 1891 and 14 March 1892; P.R.O. 30/33/11/6, Satow to F. V. Dickins, Montevideo, 15 March and 22 December 1892; cp. P.R.O.30/33/15/17, 3 March 1896.)
