The subject of the paper is given, and its file reference, from which the department may be determined. C = Commercial Department, BT 11E = Establishment Department, BT 13F = Finance Department, BT 15H = Harbour Department, MT 10M = Marine Department, MT 9R = Railway Department, BT 22 Unprefixed references and those prefixed G in the earlier volumes are to papers in BT 1.

The prefix S in the last 4 volumes refers to the papers of the Solicitor's Department, which were in existence for the years 1886-1895 when the index was made, but which no longer survive.

By using the Solicitor's Department's Registers in BT 23 it may be possible to trace some of the Solicitor's correspondence in the papers and out-letter books of the other departments of the Board of Trade.
