'Fit for the Future', the report of the Committee on Child Health Services (Court Committee) which was published in 1977 (Cmnd. 6684), recommended that the Children and Family Life Group of the Personal Social Services Council (PSSC) should be re-constituted as a joint committee of the PSSC and the Central Health Services Council (CHSC). The Children's Committee (originally referred to as the Children's Joint Committee) was consequently established in 1978, for an initial period of three years, to advise government on matters relating to children and their families. Its term of office expired in October 1981 and was not renewed.
The committee was formed of fifteen individuals drawn from the fields of health, social service and education; its membership was based on personal ability and not representation of interested organisations. Prof Frederic Brimblecombe was appointed as its chairman.
