The Committee of Inquiry into Police Interrogation Procedures in Northern Ireland was appointed in June 1978 by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Roy Mason, to examine police procedures and practice in Northern Ireland relating to the interrogation of persons suspected of scheduled offences; to examine the operation of the present procedures for dealing with complaints relating to the conduct of the Police in the course of the process of interrogation; and to report and make recommendations.

The committee was composed of Judge H G Bennett, Chairman, Sir James Houghton, Professor John Marshall, Nigel Varney, Secretary and Noel Cornick, Deputy Secretary (Belfast).

The report of the committee was presented on 16 February 1979 and was published as Cmnd. 7497 in March 1979.
