The series contains correspondence and papers of the Royal Fine Art Commission relating to the design of new building developments, alterations to buildings of architectural or historical importance, and road building including the design of bridges and street furniture such as traffic signs. They deal mainly but not exclusively with the London area. In many cases the files have been heavily weeded.

The records in this series, registered in an X series, also include plans, photographs and microfilm.
