Description

Miscellaneous letters and papers. The material is similar to that found in the bound volumes SP 93/1-31, and contains despatches from the same consuls (eg George Davies at Naples, Thomas Chamberlayne and his nephew William at Messina, Edward Allen at Naples, etc).

There are few draft letters from the Secretary of State, but one from the Duke of Newcastle to Allen dated 12 May 1740 was to send a petition from Sir John Norris, admiral of the blue, concerning a grant made in 1711 at Barcelona for his services in the Mediterranean. With the draft letter is the booklet 'The present emperor's grant to Sir John Norris of the title of duke and of a pension of 4000 ducats a year in the kingdom of Naples'.

Also in SP 93/32 are memorials from merchants at Naples in 1753 to John Hervey, commander of HMS Phoenix requesting that he act as consul during the hiatus caused by the financial problems of Consul Allen. In fact William Hamilton wrote to London in January 1753 offering to serve as consul (f 324). When Hamilton was appointed to Naples in 1764 (as envoy) he wrote to the secretary of state confirming his arrival (f 343). Includes Consul Tatem's petition in 1770 requesting help from the government as he cannot return to Sicily owing to difficulties there caused by his public duties.
