Description

Despatches from the lieutenant governor and president of Grenada, mostly forwarded by the governor of the Windward Islands, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to Grenada. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (Packets; reply to application that Grenada should be made a rendezvous for packets);
  • Home Office (Prisons Act; report of prisons inspectors on the Prisons Act);
  • Law Officers (payment of half-yearly salary of the Chief Justice; report on conviction of prisoner Joacinth - his committal illegal);
  • Treasury (payment of Stipendiary Magistrate Sinclair's extra expenses; escheated property of Mary Benoit; Tonnage Duties Act).

Individuals:

  • R Anderson (requests documents - Chief Justice Sanderson);
  • Henry Berkeley (requests appointment as Provost Marshal);
  • H Cox (certificate of Lieutenant Governor Doyle's salary);
  • Mary Gunn (fate of her son, John Gunn);
  • I Innes (dismissal of Mr Sanderson from office of Chief Justice; proceedings of judicial committee; Mr Sanderson's conduct against Mr Wells' conduct);
  • James Milne (appeals to be released from prison - imprisoned for debt);
  • Maurice O'Connor ('natives' of the colony excluded from places of trust);
  • Ramsbottom (requests six months' leave of absence for his son);
  • James Rolleston (report of his brother's death);
  • Somerville W H Ramsbottom (leave of absence, reports arrival of);
  • R Stephens (Richard Oliver Smith's death - enquires about disposal of his property);
  • Proprietors (their memorial against equalisation of sugar duties).
