Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches concerning the Turks and Caicos Islands from John P Grant, governor of Jamaica, acting governor Rushworth and acting governor Young, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from Individuals. Other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • House of Commons (printed extract showing amendment to the Turks and Caicos Islands Bill);
  • Admiralty (withdraws claim for coals expended on occasion of a visit by the governor of Jamaica in a Royal Navy ship);
  • Privy Council Office (Order in Council relating to annexation of Turks Islands to Jamaica);
  • Foreign Office (appointment of Hiram T Jones as US consular agent, appointment of Joseph Hutching as Dominican consul [2 items], claims of British subjects Darrel and Cox against the Dominican Government);
  • General Post Office (arrangements made with Atlas Company for conveyance of mails).

  • Oscar Arthur (Mr Gladstone's conduct);
  • Walter Arthur (his complaints against the receiver general and treasurer);
  • John Arthur junior (seeks post in a healthier climate);
  • Bishop of Barbados (arrears of salary due to Reverend A Rivers);
  • James Maclean (renews application for re-employment, seeks testimonial respecting his colonial service, requests grant of £50 to meet 'pressing necessities');
  • Bishop of Nassau (disendowment of the Church and appointment of successor for Reverend M James);
  • Reverend Albert Rivers (payment of his half salary)
